Statement by President Meric Gertler on the death of Her Majesty The Queen

The University of Toronto community joins all Canadians in mourning the loss of our Sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Before she acceded to the Throne, in an address to the young people of her future realms and territories, she promised that her whole life would be devoted to the service of her people. She fulfilled that promise with unparalleled grace and dignity, and in so doing set a magnificent example for us all. Her unfailing devotion to duty has been a constant source of strength and continuity for generations of Canadians as well as countless others around the world. Indeed it is difficult to imagine a world without her.

The Queen has also made an immeasurable contribution to international peace and solidarity through the Commonwealth, a vital institution which forms a key part of her legacy. The U of T community benefits greatly from the contributions of the many students, faculty, librarians, staff and alumni who come from or reside in our fellow Commonwealth countries.

In tribute to Her Majesty, in this time of sadness and in the years to come, let us remember and learn from her life of dedicated and extraordinarily generous service to others, and give thanks for a life very well lived.

Meric S. Gertler

President
