On behalf of the University of Toronto community, I offer my deep sympathy and condolences to the families of the two people who died in the mass shooting on The Danforth on the evening of Sunday, July 22 and to the victims who are now recovering.
The Danforth is one of Toronto’s most vibrant communities, attracting local residents and visitors to the restaurants and shops that have made this area so popular. The Danforth and its neighbourhoods are also home to hundreds of U of T students, faculty and staff who have been directly affected by this horrific event.
It is understandable that anyone in our community would be feeling anxious and ill-at-ease after an incident like this. Please remember that the University is here to support you. If you need help, I encourage you to access the relevant services available on our campuses – such as those provided for students noted on the Safety & Support website and for faculty and staff noted on the Health, Safety & Well-being website from HR & Equity.
I would also like to thank the many staff members involved in supporting our community and the City of Toronto’s first responders for their bravery and professionalism.
Sincerely,
Meric Gertler
President
