Sir Richard Peto received the degree Doctor of Science, honoris causa, for his contributions as a key world leader in the fight against cancer and other major diseases. Among other major accomplishments in his work in epidemiology, Sir Richard calculated the estimated number of people who will die from smoking-related illnesses in the 21st century – a crucial factor in helping shape public health initiatives around the globe.
